Polish-Lithuaninan Commonwealth Command

Polish Commonwealth High Command

There were two hetmans in Poland (Grand Hetman and Field Hetman) and two more in Lithuania (also Grand and Field). The Field Hetman was lower in rank than Grand Hetman. ‘Pulk’ of national cavalry was commanded by a colonel, a foreign regiment (like infantry or dragoons) was commanded by oberszter (colonel in German)

Polish Wallachian Style Cavalry

Polish Wallachian style cavalry

Light cavalry of the national contingent recruited from among, Moldavians, Wallachians and Ukrainians, mostly of plebeian origin.
The formation was initially small in numbers and increased its presence only after the defeat at Batoh. Banners (squadrons) usually numbered less than 100 horses.
The Wallachians were equipped with sabers, and bows were used as often as long firearms
(musketoons, handguns). In general the Wallachians did not use any armor, with some exceptions among the officers. Wallachian cavalry, similarly to the Tatars, was more suited to skirmishing, reconnaissance and screening role than to pitched battles.

Lithuanian Winged Hussars led by Aleksander Polubinski

The most famous episode of the three-day battle at Warszawa, fought from 28 to 30 July 1656, was undoubtedly the winged hussars charge led by Aleksander Hilary Połubiński. When charging on the second day of the battle the winged hussars broke two Swedish reiter regiments: Småland and Uppland, they also inflicted heavy losses on guards regiments commanded by von Anhalt and Sulzbach. It is also worth noting that King Karl Gustav was almost killed by a hussar's lance. Fortunately for the Swedes the winged hussars charging him were stopped at the last moment by his lifeguards. The Lithuanian attack did not end in defeat of the Swedish forces (there was not enough support from other units) but inflicted heavy losses on them and surely is one of the most famous winged hussar charges in history.
